Time

The word for “o’clock” is மணி. The only exception is when saying “1:00”, when the word ஒரு is used instead of ஒன்று:

• இரண்டு மணி = 2:00
• பதினொன்று மணி = 11:00
• ஒரு மணி = 1:00

To say “quarter past"or “three-quarters past”, add -ஏ the appropriate fraction to the hour. Ex:

• எட்டேகால் மணி = 8:15
• ஐந்தேமுக்கால் மணி = 5:45

To say “half past”, add அரை to the hour. Ex:

• நான்கரை மணி = 4:30

The word for “minute” is நிமிடம். To give the exact time, follow the hour with மணி and the minute by நிமிடம். Ex:

• பன்னிரண்டு மணி நாற்பது நிமிடம் = 12:40
• ஒரு மணி இருபது நிமிடம் = 1:20

Days of the Week

Each day of the week has a name, but when referring to a particular day (Ex: “On Sunday, we…”), the suffix கிழமை is added to the day’s name. When adding -கிழமை to ஞாயிறு and திங்கள், the words change slightly.
